My name is Francis Abueg. I am writing this blog as much for me as for others I hope to help. I am a clinical and forensic psychologist who specializes in helping survivors of war trauma as well as many of the exceptionally frightening things that happen in our everyday world.

I do not believe in the blank slate approach to psychotherapy. I have studied deeply traditional psychoanalytic approaches, including immersion in a three-year weekly psychoanalytic supervision in graduate school. For 10 of the last 15 years, I have practiced in a hospital based treatment clinic that was heavily influenced by psychoanalytic thinking. I know how to maintain the frame, to subvert my identity and personhood in service of old school conceptualizations of a pure projective screen for patients. It works yes, but does it maximize the power of the relationship between the psychologist and the patient? Absolutely not.

In this blog, I will share how I, as a whole person,with foibles, faux pas, and occasional fearlessness and ferocity, am able to see and begin to understand another vulnerable human in the clinic office.
